Norwaytex Cathodic Protection System
CORROSION is one of the greatest enemies of the ship and its machinery. It is also the toughest enemy to fight against, for the people working on the ship.
Iron is one susbtance which is used in abundance on the ship. From the main body of the ship to the smallest equipment used in operation. Iron makes its presence felt almost every type of equipment used on board.
Iron is also the most corrosion-prone material when it comes in contact with air and water. A ship is continuously in contact with water and moisture-laden winds which make it highly susceptible to corrosion. The outer body (mainly hull) is continuously in contact with sea water, making it extremely vulnerable to corrosion, therefore besides a good coating system, marne vessel need CP (Cathodic Protection) to prevent it from corrosion.
What is CP (Cathodic Protection)
Cathodic Protection is a technique used to control the corrosion of a metal surface (vessel body) by making the cathode of an electrochemical cell. The simple method of protection connect metal to be protected (vessel body) to a more easily corroded “sacrificial metal” to act as the anode. The sacrificial metal then corrodes instead of the protected metal (Ship body)
